The company’s own No7 ‘Protect and Perfect’ brand, which famously sold out at stores across Britain the day after featuring on a BBC Horizon programme in 2007, takes the crown as the star beauty product from Boots at its US partner.

Strong demand for lotions that tackle wrinkles and sags boosted the company’s health and beauty operation, which posted the highest profit growth of all Boots divisions. Trading profits at the arm grew 6.8pc.

Overall, Boots posted a 21pc rise in pre-tax profits to £837m despite a 2.6pc fall in revenue, as the group looked to cut costs in the face of weakening demand from its dominant European market.

The British-based pharmacy revealed the trans-Atlantic success of its anti-ageing range as it reported its first set of financial results since the major tie-up with Walgreens. The partnership brought about £14m of cost and revenue benefits to Boots this year, it said.
